RAR is a popular archive file format. RAR files are similar to ZIP files. You might have downloaded a RAR file from the Internet only to wonder how to open it. Even if you are running Mac OSX Lion, Apple’s latest desktop OS, your Macintosh won’t open RAR files. At least not by default.
There are many free apps you can use to open RAR files on Mac OSX.
Fortunately, there are plenty of free applications that will open RAR files for you.

The following are some of the more popular free Mac OSX Apps for opening RAR files:
I’ve tried these apps and can say that they all work well in OSX Lion and in Apple’s older operating systems on PPC and Intel processors.
Right now, I use Unarchiver, a personal favorite for the simple reason that I like the icon, a nicely rendered corrugated shipping box. RAR Expander is another favorite (It’s icon is handsome, too). Right now I’ll be providing instructions for downloading and installing the Unarchiver.

- Drag the Unarchiver app to your applications folder
Right, and that’s it. Now, every time you have a RAR file that you need to open, simply double click the RAR file and the Unarchiver will open it for you. By default, the Unarchiver places the contents of the RAR files in the same folder as the RAR file.

Unarchiver can also open ZIP files, as well as other files compressed using other file formats, such as Tar-GZip, Tar-BZip2, 7-zip, LhA, and SIT.

Be careful opening RAR files sent by people you don’t know. Senders could be spammers and mail attachments could contain files that might harm your computer. If you know the source of a RAR files you are opening, let’s say it was sent by someone you trust or you downloaded it yourself, then have no fear. Double click with abandon.
